About Us
Who are we?
We are the ARC of the PA Heartland Chapter. The chapter was created on May 1, 2011 by the merging of the Clearfield-Jefferson, DuBois, and Elk-Cameron Counties Chapters.
Across the United States, there is an American Red Cross office that serves every inch. We all provide the same basic services, though some of us may branch out into different areas to meet community needs.
We are your American Red Cross. We are based in downtown DuBois, Pennsylvania, at 109 N Brady St., on the second floor above the Planet Bike shop. Elevator access is available via the rear enterance.
The office is open from Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but you will often find it open more than that. There always seems to be something going on - disaster volunteers meeting, CPR or first aid trainings, planning meetings for blood drives or other work.
Our basic area to care for is determined by our headquarters in Washington, D.C. For our chapter, we serve all of Cameron, Elk, and Jefferson Counties and most of Clearfield County.
For this area, we are to fulfill the mission of the American Red Cross.
What is the Mission of the American Red Cross?
The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
The chapter provides:
We do all of this as a community wide effort. All money used for this work comes from the community and Area United Ways, United Funds and other organizations. We receive no government money for the work done locally.
Is the American Red Cross part of the U.S. government?
The American Red Cross functions independently of the government but works closely with government agencies, such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), during times of major crises. It is mandated by Congress to give aid to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and to disaster victims at home and abroad. It does this through services that are consistent with its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement allowing the Red Cross to stay neutral and impartial.
Who founded the American Red Cross?
Clara Barton (1821-1912) dominates the early history of the American Red Cross, which was modeled after the International Red Cross. She did not originate the Red Cross idea, but she was the first person to establish a lasting Red Cross Society in America.
She successfully organized the American Association of the Red Cross in Washington, D.C., on May 21, 1881. Created to serve America in peace and in war, during times of disaster and national calamity, Barton's organization took its service beyond that of the International Red Cross Movement by adding disaster relief to battlefield assistance. She served as the organization's volunteer president until 1904.
